Library Guidelines

Library visits:

· PreK-4th classes come to the library twice a week. Fifth comes once (due to band scheduling).

· Students may come any afternoon from 3:00-3:15 to check out (if approved by their teacher).

· Library lessons focus on encouraging the love of reading. That usually includes read-alouds: to introduce a new series, read about relevant topics, share new authors or new books, etc. Teachers are encouraged to share classroom topics so that classroom learning can be supported in the library.

· At the end of each visit, 1st-5th are allowed to check out new books or renew current books.

On library days, students should bring the following:

1) Their sheet protector/folder with their level and barcode for check out

2) All their books (even if not finished reading them)

3) Any money for the library store

General:

1) Students should be encouraged to read for 15 minutes per day. It can be 5 + 5 + 5 minutes.

Ex. When packed early, finished a test, waiting for bus, on the way to practice, etc.

2) Students need to stay in assigned reading zone/levels unless given permission by the teacher or librarian to go a little above or a little below reading level. (For example, to finish a series of books)

3) Students can take no more than 2 AR tests daily.

4) If the teacher or I read a book to/with the entire class and it’s an AR book, all students can test on it regardless of level.

AR testing:

1. Students in lower grades should read a 0.5 point book at least TWICE before testing on it.

Students are not expected to read larger chapter books more than once before testing.

2. Older students are encouraged to check out a small .5 point book and a chapter book on their level.

3. Students should be able to read and test on at least one small book per week.

4. Chapter books should be read and tested in 2 weeks or less.

5. Library books should NOT be at computer. (Students cannot look back for answers.)

6. Before testing, students should write the book title and/or quiz # if available on AR log.

7. AR Testing is done through Clever portal while on school grounds (before class, after tests, early finishers, etc. It cannot be done at home. Occasionally, older students can test during library time.)

· Go to Clever account. > Click on big ‘R’ for Renaissance > Click on orange Accelerated Reader Icon > In the search bar, type quiz number (best option) or title. If using the title, make sure to check that it is the correct author!

· After testing, enter percent correct and points earned in log.

8. To attend AR reward celebrations, students must have an average of at least 80% and be on level.

Library Store:

We now have a ‘store’ in the library. The store has pencils, special pens, note pads, erasers, etc. Students may purchase items during their library time. Prices range from $.25-3.00. Proceeds are used to fund AR celebrations, library activities and book purchases.
